Arsene Lupin is a master thief. He steals from the wealthy and obnoxious, after first asking courteously for them to hand over the works of art, jewels, or other items desired. Arsene is even thoughtful enough to notify his victim of when he will acquire the items in question, if the owner does not decide to go ahead and hand them over. He then takes those proceeds and gives part of it away to those who need financial assistance. As this story develops one must try to figure out which character i [...]
This is by far the best mystery/crime book I've every read. It kept me excited from the moment Lupin was mentioned till the very end. But I'm not satisfied yet, I'm hungry to read more and more and MORE about him. Didn't know he was a thief. He's more like Kaito Kid from Detective Conan. I loved who he robs though. That is very moral of him. If you love detective, thrill and mystery - you'll enjoy reading this for sure.

A cheeky thief. A spoiled lady. A quiet assistant. A divided suitor.A riot of characters come together to create a most unusual assembly that most solve the mystery of Arsene Lupin and his brilliantly executed plans that leave many a minds boggled.I have heard a lot about Arsene Lupin but never read any of Maurice Leblanc’s famed stories. Once upon a time I had a spare time and no ARCs to read (that’s one for the books!) and decided it was time to chase down Lupin and see what all of the fus [...]
Arsene Lupin series is my favorite detective series , unlike Sherlock Holmes Arsene Lupin is a thief who only steal stuffs from rich peoples and he solves cases like Sherlock Holmes , he is as smart as Sherlock Holmes , so people called him " Gentle Thief " , and many women is in love with him , but the one he truly loved was killed by Herlock Holmes ( It s actually Sherlock Holmes ) , in an accident . When he was young he doesn't have a good childhood because his father died when he was young , [...]
I'm reading the Indonesian version of this book, and I'm totally disappointed by the translation. It took me so long to finish a book that is considerably thin because I have to stop reading every two chapters in average. It is terrible.h.Note: This book is thrown away to the bookswap table at IRF 2014
Smart thief. He is described as a true gentleman, full of destructive and constructive ideas I would say about him. Still I feel amazed how he can be different characters in the adventures Just love this book
Very amusing and clever
This is not a first book in the series or a story collection, but a translated (by Edgar Jepson) novelization by Maurice Leblanc of his own play of the same title. The play (and the novelization) is set after The Hollow Needle and before 813, and the latter has some spoilers for this play/novelization.
Fresh and vibrant book; Jepson adapted a LeBlanc (creator of Lupin) play, that is probably why there is so much dialogue in this novel.Master thief Arsene Lupin announces his robberies of a millionaire in advance and still gets away. The duke plays a special part.
ARSENE LUPIN. (1909). Edgar Jepson & Maurice Leblanc. ****. Although Jepson (1863-1938) is credited as an author on this book, it turns out that he was actually the translator – Leblanc (1864-1941) having written the book himself. The title character was developed by Leblanc and was introduced (in France) at the same time that Sherlock Holmes was being introduced in England by Conan Doyle. They are very different, however. Lupin was the first gentleman thief and master of disguises. He was [...]
Lupin amat panda [...]
Sayang sekali, saya agak kecewa.Ekspektasi saya tinggi betul untuk buku ini. Soalnya saya penggemar berat Kaito Kid. Sementara Conan/Shinichi yang merupakan fan Sherlock Holmes, Kaito Kid ini sepertinya penggemar Arsene Lupin.Sinopsis di kaver belakang menjanjikan kisah cinta(?) Arsene Lupin pula. Jelas saja, sebagai penggemar karakter antagonis, saya girang bukan kepalang. Entah deh, menurut saya kisah bad boy yang suka sama cewek begini imut sekali.Saya kira, saya akan dapat kisah petualangan [...]
As with so many books I have tried to list, this one was not the one accepted by . I have just finished Arsene Lupin an adventures tale published in 1909. This was the novelization of the original play from that time period. The story takes place in several houses with characters that are not all likeable or well defined. From the start the story (dialogue) is stilted and very bland. Only after the action moves to Paris and the characters are reduced to a few does the tale pick up its pace and i [...]
Ohhhhh, this was so much fun! I discovered Arsene Lupin via his "grandson" Lupin III, and also have a love of late-19th and early-20th-century mysteries, such as Sherlock Holmes and stories by Georgette Heyer. This tale kept me riveted from start to finish, and I am so looking forward to reading more! The only thing that confuses me is I can't seem to find this book listed anywhere. It is AVAILABLE in lots of places, and is often referred to as the "first" Lupin book, but places like don't seem [...]
While originally being introduced to Arsene Lupin through his descendant, Lupin the Third, I have discovered I enjoy the original writings as much as I enjoy the anime and manga series. There is a little bit of Robin Hood, a little bit of James Bond in these men. The tales lean to the cerebral battles rather than physical, as Lupin stays one step ahead of Gainimard and Guercard to win his treasures. And even in the end, when sometimes he must give up what he has won, he still manages to put a go [...]
I read a kindle edition. This is my first foray into the Gentleman Thief, and I enjoyed it. The humor and the moments of growing tension were excellent. I was halfway thru the book before I really grasped that there might be more to it. The cat-and-mouse scenes between the Law and the Thief were quite engaging. Some parts were predictable, like the romance and some other details, but that was ok, we want to know who the boy and girl are, and then we can hope that boy gets to keep girl. A few swe [...]
Ditulis [...]
I came to this book *after* reading book 2 in the series (Arsene Lupin vs Herlock Sholmes) and I didn't think this was quite as good. I think that Lupin suits shorter stories - much like Sherlock Holmes - and the novel form is a littel stretched. Especially as it was clear fairly on who Lupin was disguised as.However, LeBlanc's writing steams along and some of his descriptions are brilliantly funny (such as the bearded caretaker and his slightly less bearded wife). Definitely worth reading, alth [...]
A mystery story about a clever thief that plays with his wealthy upperclass victims before robbing them. The mystery of who Lupin is and how he manages to pull off his outlandish thefts is not the important part of the book. In fact, it is not really much of a mystery at all who Lupin really is. The real draw of the book is Lupin himself. Lupin, a charming rogue and the very definition of a gentleman thief. The detective in charge of the case has a great flair for the dramatic entrance. For inst [...]
This is a novelization of a play based on the adventures of the fictional French thief Arsene Lupin. It holds up fairly well-- some of the plot details, style, characterization, etc. are dated, but the basic core of the book remains quite as engaging as any contemporary heist novel that pits a team of charismatic thieves against a grim enforcer of the law. Worth it for any fan of Sherlock Holmes (to see the other side, as it were), Leverage (although it's less of an ensemble production), or the [...]
Arsene Lupin has been called the Sherlock Holmes of thieves. I am not sure that is quite right because Lupin's talent lies in elaborate plans, thorough planning, and his ability to change a plan instantly depending on circumstances. Either way, these short stories of Lupin's adventures as a master burglar are inventive, humorous, and thoroughly entertaining. Found them via my Kindle, which has turned into a prime source for old, classic, popular literature. In conclusion: a quick, fun and enterta [...]
2nd book @2015awalnya membosankan, gaya bercerita yang bertele2 ditambah terjemahan yang kurang oke bikin malas ngelanjutin baca. tapi lalu ceritanya mulai menarik ketika trio charolais muncul di bab 4 atau bab 5. sayangnya gaya berceritanya kaya ngasal gitu, entah memang seperti itu atau terjemahannya yang kurang bagus, intinya kurang enaklah banyak bagian yg bikin kening berkerut karena ngga masuk akal dan aneh, twist cukup ketebak, dialog sering absurd, endingnya bertele2 banget yah gitu deh [...]
nice novel. The continuous comic narrative featuring the exploits of a french Chevalier thief truly holds the reader and gets him flipping pages like mad. I can see here the inspiration behind many animés and animation shorts as "The Perils of Penelope Pitstop".I should also say Lupin seems the inspiration behind Batman's nemesis Penguin. Not just name, but also comic demeanour and look, including top-hat, single eye glass, gloves and nose. You gotta understand comic books were born from pulp f [...]
I hadn't read an Arsène Lupin book since I was in high school some 30 years ago. When I discovered it was public domain, I decided it was time to read one.Although the pace and vocabulary is different than reading something more current, I wasn't disappointed. There are a number of public domain classics that I will be putting on my to-read list. For those of us that are stuck in a genre, free public domain books are a blessing.
I read all of the Arsene Lupin collection something like 30 years ago. Back then I was crazy about that gentleman burglar, who with his extraordinary mind for solving mysteries and crimes, transportd you into the early 20th centuries and charms you with is wits.I can't say which one of the books ( 20 if I am not mistaken ) I liked the best. I loved them all.(PS I have read these in their original language: French)
This is quite possibly my favorite adventure of the French Gentleman-Burglar, Arsene Lupin. Lupin's audacity and panache never cease to amaze, and watching him fool a millionaire, his family, various police, an Inspector, and his nemesis, the famed Detective Guerchard had me in awe. LeBlanc's writing style makes us wonder: how did he do it? Just how did he get away with yet another theft under everyone's nose? The answer will enthrall you.
The infamous thief Arsene Lupin is a sort of Scarlet Pimpernel crossed with Moriarty. It's a short, fast-paced detective story told from the investigator's perspective. Unfortunately, Lupin's identity is clear very early in the book, and the investigating is of the most rudimentry sort. Eventually we meet Lupin's gang, who I like best of everyone in the book, and the love interest, who I don't like at all.
Massively confusing: I started reading this thinking it was the translation of Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Cambrioleur but it isn't, and seems to be instead an adaptation of a play based on Lupin's adventures. seems equally confused and claims the book that I actually read doesn't exist. The book isn't great, and I think I need to read the real first book in the series to work out what I really think of Maurice Leblanc and his famous creation.
